The forum, notifications and the app

The forum is part of the site: the same account, the same header, and the music keeps playing.

The forum

Forum in the top menu opens the boards. The forum shows inside the site, so the player at the bottom keeps going while you read and post, and the search box at the top searches the forum.

The bell

The bell at the top right shows your forum notifications: replies, quotes, mentions, private messages and more. The red number is how many you haven’t read yet; it’s in the browser tab’s title too.

The bell opened, with a notification
  • Tap a notification to go to it; it’s then marked read.
  • Mark all read clears the number.
  • All notifications opens the full list on the forum.

The number updates by itself while the page is open. The envelope next to the bell is your private messages.

Notifications on your phone or computer

You can get your forum notifications even when the site isn’t open, like messages from an app. Where it’s offered, it’s at the bottom of the bell:

  1. Open the bell and tap Turn on.
  2. Your browser asks whether the site may show notifications: allow it.
Turn on notifications at the bottom of the bell
  • It’s for each device and browser: turn it on on each one you want them on.
  • Choose which ones (once they’re on) opens the forum’s notification settings, where the Push column picks which kinds come to your devices.
  • Tapping a notification opens the page it’s about.
  • “Notifications are blocked” means you once said no: allow notifications for the site in your browser’s settings, then tap Turn on again.

On an iPhone or iPad, notifications only work once the site is on your home screen (see below). Open Newcastle Beats from the home screen and turn them on there.

The site on your home screen

Add the site to your home screen and it opens like an app: full screen, without the browser’s address bar, with the unread number on its icon.

iPhone and iPad (Safari)

  1. Open the site in Safari.
  2. Tap the Share button (the square with an arrow).
  3. Choose Add to Home Screen, then Add.

Android (Chrome)

  1. Open the site in Chrome.
  2. Tap the ⋮ menu at the top right.
  3. Choose Add to Home screen (or Install app), then Install or Add.

Other browsers on Android (Samsung Internet, Firefox, Brave) have the same in their menu. On a computer, Chrome and Edge offer Install in the address bar or the menu.
